I love it when my clients ask for something different.
The Amalfi Coast is full of spectacular views, panoramas and amazing spots that leave everlasting memories.
But I want to give travellers a better experience, an added value to the trip that makes the difference.
Jason and Stephanie contacted me via my website (www.amalficoasttour.it/en), and reading their request I found words like Ravello, foodies, Mozzarella, and love for out of the ordinary tours…
The pickup would have been in Amalfi and I wanted to plan a tailored itinerary for them, including all the stops they required and even more.
So I started thinking about timings, stops, and what to do. One thing I had clear in my mind was: “the experience has to be authentic”.
I didn’t want to show them touristy places as I prefer showing another “face” of the Amalfi Coast and the surrounding area.
I was able to design a very particular tour that was both a “tour of the Amalfi Coast” and a “food tour”.
We met in Amalfi, and started the tour going to Ravello, where they had some time at leisure to visit the town on their own. They loved it, I still remember the smile on their faces when they came back to the car to continue the tour.
The next stop was at a limoncello place. I didn’t want to take them to a shop, I wanted to show them how this liquor is made, all the manual work that is needed to make it, so we stopped at a place where limoncello is still made in the traditional way.
Then we started the “food experience” part of the tour.
Food Tour Amalfi Coast
I planned a stop at a Mozzarella place, where I organized a quick “Mozzarella class”. Jason, Stephanie and their kids were able to look at the man making the Mozzarella… the whole process starting from the curd until the final step.
They also enjoyed making some mozzarella by themselves, it was so nice seeing how happy they were.
I had a clear idea about what was coming next so we bought the Mozzarella they made and took it to our next stop.
I was travelling with foodies (like me!), so I wanted to let them taste a very local tomato: the corbarino.
This little tomato is grown only in a very small area on the Lattari Mountains, and has a very special sweet taste. So I took them to a farm to table restaurant for a nice traditional lunch.
We had a big antipasto, with vegetables, salami, cheeses, and the Mozzarella they made.
Jason and Stephanie’s son told me he likes cooking, so I arranged a quick cooking class of the pasta course: Paccheri al Corbarino.
We moved to the kitchen, where the chef taught the boy how to prepare a fresh corbarino sauce and let him do part of the work.
Back to our table, they tasted this special dish, and agreed they have never tasted such a sweet and delicious tomato before.
We continued the tour leaving the restaurant, headed to some sightseeing. But I choose a less popular part of the Amalfi Coast.
We drove to Vietri Sul Mare, where we stopped at a ceramic workshop, and watched a craftman creating and decorating potteries.
In Cetara we talked about the “colatura di alici“, a traditional sauce that is extracted from anchovies. We went to a place where the colatura is made, and I showed them all the process of making it before coming back to Amalfi via Maiori and Minori.
I have very special memories of that day, I was sad to say goodbye, but very happy to see that Jason and his lovely family enjoyed the day we spent together.
We became friends, and I think about that day very often… and a smile comes over my face.
Thank you Jason and Stephanie, I hope to welcome you back soon!
