The Fjord of Furore

The fjord of Furore (fiordo di Furore) is located between Praiano and Conca dei Marini, in the town of Furore. This little portion of the Amalfi Coast was formerly a fishermen village and then, after the industrial development, a flour mill and a paper mill were built by the torrent (Schiato) that drains the waters from the mountains above (Lattari mountains). It has been, and still is, the location for many movie sets and tv commercials. In 1948, Roberto Rossellini directed the movie “L’Amore” and the set was in Furore. By the water some old houses, part of the village, seem to be put there are by an artist to create a wonderful scenery that has become very famous among travellers. A little beach reachable by a trail from the mountains or by hundreds of steps from the bridge of the Amalfi drive, the Fjord of Furore is one of the main destinations on the coast. The water is emerald green, the location is one of the most evocative places. Every time I cross the bridge, my eyes look for this little village with few coloured houses and some boats on the pebble beach, and each time I wonder how living in this magical place would be.

How to see the Fjord of Furore

Unfortunately it seems that it wouldn’t be possible anymore. The inhabitants had to suddenly move from the village, because there’s a risk for some big rocks to slide. For this reason the access to the fjord is forbidden since 2018. The municipalities of Furore and Conca dei Marini closed it building a brick wall by the bridge, as it became really dangerous. It is not possible to reach the beach, not possible to reach it by boat, as the Coast Guard closed the access in August 2018. The only way to see the Fjord of Furore is from the bridge but, again, it’s not that easy because there’s no place to park a car. You should park pretty far away and walk to the bridge to see it from above… no way to get down by the water. You could go there by bus (the SITA bus). There’s a bus stop right by the bridge… you get off the bus and you’re there. But if you ask me: “is it worth going to the Fjord of Furore by bus?” I would reply: I’m not sure. You have to consider that once you get off the bus, you wouldn’t have much to do but looking at the Fjord of Furore from a bridge, with no possibility to walk down to the beach, no possibility to take the popular pictures you see on the web. And the next bus would arrive at least 1 hour later… During my tours, I always try to stop for a minute by the Fjord, but it isn’t always possible, as the road is too narrow to get buses and coaches get through if you park.
