The words Lattari Mountains are almost unknown to most of the people who travel to the Amalfi Coast.
But every year millions of travellers choose to travel to places located on those mountains: the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Coast.
The Lattari Mountains (Monti Lattari) are the backbone of the Sorrentine peninsula, that is located between the gulf of Naples and the one of Salerno.
Some of the most famous tourist destinations of Italy are located on this peninsula: Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Capri, Sorrento and many other towns and villages.
Why is this area so special? For several reasons.
I would say that the main reason are the great views, the food and the variety of experiences you can enjoy.
Panoramas from the Lattari Mountains
The views you can look at from the Lattari Mountains are unique.
Starting from Vietri sul Mare, the first village of the Amalfi Coast, you can appreciate several different landscapes.
And the mountains are always part of it, most of the times are the reason that make that particular view so amazing.
The old villages and towns that you pass by, driving the Amalfi Drive, wouldn’t be so picturesque if they weren’t located in that particular context or background.
Try to imagine, for example, Positano out of its context. Would it be so picturesque if its houses weren’t nestled into the rocks of the Lattari Mountains? And Praiano? And Vietri sul Mare?
Hiking on the Lattari Mountains
The number of people that come to the Sorrentine Peninsula to hike the Lattari Mountains is raising year by year.
There are several trails you can choose. Some of them are really old.
The most famous is probably the Path of the Gods, that connects Bomerano to Nocelle.
From Amalfi or Pontone, you can hike the Valle delle Ferriere trail.
The longest trail goes from Corpo di Cava to Punta Campanella, the edge of the peninsula and is called “Alta via dei Lattari”.
If you want to see some of the most amazing sunsets on the coast, you definitely have to reach Punta Campanella, or Monte Comune.
